Individuals wishing to qualify as an EXTEND teacher may enrol on a course organised at various locations throughout the UK. During the 12-14 day training course, students attend a series of lectures and practical workshops covering anatomy and physiology (basic knowledge of the body). The use of music and rhythm; communications skills and teaching techniques. The course is project-focussed, encouraging further self-study to improve individual techniques of class management, the early and accurate recognition of disabilities and problems, and how to adapt exercise to the individual.
The initial training period is spread over 3-5 months culminating in a theoretical and practical examination. At the end of which the candidate would have completed their very own portfolio of evidence to support their qualification.
Important changes to Courses 2011
Since the beginning of 2010 the EXTEND Training Committee has been concentrating on revising the Teacher Training course, due to the recent changes on the National Qualifications Framework in association with the SkillsActive Council and Register of Exercise Professionals. The IRAS (Industry Award) scheme for general qualifications ended on 31st March 2010 so it was essential for EXTEND to complete the accreditation process with in the 2010 year-end timescale. The Register of Exercise Professionals would not be able to recognise EXTEND qualification under the previous scheme beyond 30 September 2010.
In the latter half of 2010 Pat Goodacre and Lynne Berry (both Area Directors of Development) delivered the first newly revised course in Barnsley, South Yorkshire led by Wendy Penny, Director of Training. Many congratulations to Wendy Penny and the Training Committee for all their hard work which resulted in successful acceptance of the new qualification. The qualification is accredited by Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT) includes a Certificate at level 2 and two Awards at level 3 on the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF).
