EXTEND TEACHER TRAINING COURSE

Do I need to have any special qualifications or experience?
Many of our teachers come from a variety of backgrounds, physiotherapy, dance and ‘keep fit’, sports, rehabilitation, NHS and PCT’s, residential homes and day centres. EXTEND accepts students from a wide variety of backgrounds. It is not essential to have previous qualifications but advantageous if you have knowledge or experience in at least one of the following:

  • experience working with the elderly/less able of any age
  • physiology
  • anatomy
  • nursing or caring
  • teaching
  • music/dance
  • sports/fitness

EXTEND Training Course will equip the teacher with the knowledge and confidence to deliver safe and progressive, healthy exercise classes.

What is the training course all about?
The course comprises of both theory and practical work as well as assessment. The theory includes anatomy (the structure of the body), physiology (how the body works) and kinesiology (how the body moves) as well as the principles of exercise. Students are trained and assessed on how to structure, plan and monitor safe exercising; the use of suitable equipment, music and developing teaching techniques. Our training includes First Aid certifcation.

*The assessment is both written (written examination and coursework) as well as continual assessment culminating in a teaching practical examination.

CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAYS (CPD)

All qualified teachers are obliged to attend one Continuing Professional Development Day (CPD) every year. Those teachers registered for REPS will need to attend two.
