|
Following a series of technical meetings between EXTEND, SkillsActive, (the Sector Skills Council), and the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) it has been agreed that a new category of registration will be created through a joint registration process. Diploma Teachers are now able to join REPs with the registration status of “Level 3 EXTEND Teachers”, and will enjoy all of the rights and benefits of this recognition as full members. If they also hold other exercise and fitness qualifications these will be added to their status of registration. |

| EXTEND TEACHERS EXTEND Teachers come from a variety of backgrounds and age groups - Doctors, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Care Assistants, Wardens of Sheltered Housing, Activity Co-ordinators, Health Promotion Officers and qualified Movement/Fitness teachers. All value the additional specialised training from EXTEND. The Course includes Anatomy, Physiology and Kinesiology, the Process of Ageing, Class Planning, use of Music and Rhythm and the EXTEND philosophy. Those who gain their Diploma affiliate to EXTEND. Their classes are recognised and insured by EXTEND. All EXTEND Teachers are obliged to undertake Continuing Professional Development sessions every year in order to retain their recognition as qualified EXTEND Teachers. BECOMING AN EXTEND TEACHER Individuals wishing to qualify as an EXTEND teacher may enrol on a course organised at locations throughout the UK. During a twelve day course, students attend a series of lectures and practical workshops covering anatomy and physiology (basic knowledge of the body); use of music and rhythm; communications skills and teaching techniques. The course is project-focussed, encouraging further self-study to improve individual techniques of class management; the early and accurate recognition of disabilities and problems, and how to adapt exercise to the individual. The initial training period is spread over 4-6 months culminating in a theoretical and practical examination. In addition, teachers will now have the opportunity to obtain the newly accredited City and Guilds Affinity Level 3 certificate in Enhancing Movement Activities with Older People. Membership of EXTEND is through an affiliate scheme. Members pay an annual subscription which also funds their membership of the EXTEND public liability insurance scheme. All members are obliged to undertake Continuing Educational Training every year. The courses are professionally run and adjusted according to local demand, needs and interest. |
