EXTEND CLASSES
EXTEND is active in many parts of the UK, in hospitals, nursing homes, sheltered housing, special needs clubs, community education centres and in village halls. In addition many EXTEND teachers provide one-to-one sessions for those who require specialised exercise, such as stroke patients. etc.  EXTENDERS report a marked improvement in their feeling of well being as a result of classes given by EXTEND Teachers.  The exercises can provide a springboard to other pursuits and sports that are even more active.

THE AIM OF EXTEND
There are around 11 million people of pensionable age in the UK, some 20% of the population.  Of this group, nearly 40% are totally sedentary. EXTEND exists to promote physical training and education for persons over sixty and less able people of any age. The charity helps them to develop their physical, mental and spiritual capacity, realise their full potential as individuals and members of society and improve their quality of life.
INCLUDING THE EXCLUDED
While 40% of all people in the UK have sedentary lifestyles, it is estimated that up to 80% of ethnic minority elders are sedentary, leading to a greater risk of degenerative disease.  EXTEND is sensitive to this particularly vulnerable population group, having special regard to the beliefs, way of life and customs of these distinct cultural groups.  This work is carried out in co-operation with local social providers to help redress the imbalance in health experienced by our older ethnic populations. (Picture courtesy Health Development Agency)

EXTEND 'fits in' to its local community, embracing language and cultural differences as a matter of course.  In Surrey it is as natural as the W.I. and in predominantly Asian or Afro-Caribbean neighbourhoods it 'struts its stuff' to Raga or Reggae.  This naturalness and inclusivity rapidly overcomes the reticence of newcomers and folds them into a stimulating, happy, shared event, which could just become a life-extending experience.

Health and mobility problems can isolate older and disabled people, increasing the risk of mental and physical ill-health.  Extend classes provide opportunities for them to become more socially integrated.

Individuals with osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and those who have suffered a stroke, those with learning difficulties as well as physical disabilities, together with the young people with hearing and visual impairments, have all benefited from EXTEND programmes in the past.

Working in small groups, often in nursing and residential homes, EXTEND helps people with Parkinson's disease and those who have suffered falls.  Such work is frequently carried out in partnership with physiotherapists and specialist nurses, many of whom go on to attend EXTEND training courses in order to broaden their own knowledge.

EXTEND works with managed community care in supported sheltered housing settings such as Hanover 'Extra Care' scheme. Training courses have been run in hospitals and primary care centres, with GPs using EXTEND to enhance fitness levels among their patient populations.

Some EXTEND teachers attend specialised courses to enhance skills and knowledge such as Phase IV Cardiac Rehabilitation and Exercise in the Prevention of Falls and Injuries Courses, enabling them to work in partnership with fitness and health professionals on delivering courses to defined groups.
